History is being made by figure skater-turned-speed skater Kathryn Magno as she competes for the Philippines in the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy. She is the first ever Filipina to represent our country in the Asian Trophy. It is being held, also for the first time in the Philippines, at the SM Ice Skating Rink, Mega Fashion Hall from October 21 to 23, 2014.
Today was the second day of the competition, and the lone representative of our country has been doing us proud.
Kathryn Magno bagged a bronze medal in her first event on day 1, the Senior Ladies 1500 meter category. Today, she was amazing, finishing in 3rd place in the Senior Ladies 500 meters category.
Having been able to talk to her a while ago, I found out that she started training only five months ago! Humbly, she told me that it hasn’t dawned on her yet that she was making history. She said that the feeling she gets now is the same as when she first started competing in figure skating. Her last figure skating competition in the Philippines was the 2010 Philippine Nationals.
She will be competing for her third and final event tomorrow, the Senior Ladies 1000 meter category. Also, she is hoping to represent our country for the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics!
